  11. <p>   Customs: US citizens are permitted to enter Spain without
  12. visas as temporary visitors for business, tourism, or transit.
  13. Bearers of US diplomatic and official passports must have
  14. appropriate visas regardless of the nature of the visit.

  16. <p>   Climate and clothing: Clothes suitable for the Washington,
  17. DC, climate are recommended. Slacks are worn in public, but no
  18. shorts. Sweaters and raincoats are advisable.
  19. </p>
  20. <p>   Health: Sanitary conditions and facilities meet European
  21. standards. Typhoid, typhus, and gamma globulin immunizations
  22. are suggested. Health requirements change; check latest
  23. information.

  25. <p>   Telecommunications: Local and long-distance telephone
  26. services are readily available. Government telegraph offices
  27. handle all telegrams. Madrid is six time zones ahead of eastern
  28. standard time.

  30. <p>   Transportation: Public transportation is inexpensive and
  31. widely used. Taxis are numerous, and fares are reasonable. Air
  32. and rail facilities serve most cities in Spain, with
  33. connections to major cities in Europe. Rental cars are
  34. available, with or without driver. Major highways are good.
  35. Gasoline prices are among the highest in Europe.
